The Sarasota Police Department Training Unit held a Use of Force Community Forum Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 9 a.m. to Noon at Sarasota Police Department Headquarters.
Those who were in attendance participated in use of force scenarios and Sarasota Police Officers were available to answer questions and explain how and why force can be used in law enforcement.
Participants played the role of police officers and police officers played the role of citizens in four different scenarios including a traffic stop, domestic dispute and a video simulation program where participants had to make split second decisions.
“It is important that citizens have an opportunity to learn about and give input about law enforcement and use of force issues,” said Chief Bernadette DiPino. “This forum will demonstrate the challenges our officers face daily as they confront individuals who refuse to cooperate with police or endanger the safety of our community members. Participants will take on the role of a police officer and experience the split second decision making process our officers can experience when faced with typical law enforcement encounters with the community.”
